FLW Pro Fishing Tip of the Week
Chevy Pro Jay Yelas, Corvallis, Oregon
Sometimes fish will hit at a swimbait as it goes by, but not get the hook inside their mouths because of the angle of their approach. When that happens consistently, I’ll add a Size 2 treble hook to the bait and let it dangle under the belly as a stinger hook. If you rig a swimbait Texas style, just put the hook point through the head, bring it down and turn it, and before you reinsert it up through the lure’s body, put the point through the eye of the treble. Then you go ahead and reinsert the point into the swimbait. That’s all there is to it. As long as the eye of the treble is free on the shaft of the single hook, it won’t affect the action of the bait. If fish are smacking the swimbait pretty good anyway, you don’t need a stinger hook. Otherwise, you don’t want to use this rig in water that has a lot of snags in it. In open water where you’re dealing with short-strikers, though, it works great.

FLW Pro Fishing Tip of the Week National Guard Pro Brett Hite, Phoenix, Arizona When I’m practicing for an upcoming tournament, there are a couple of important things I take into account. For one, there’s the body of water I’m fishing. Is it a Lake Guntersville, or a Beaver Lake? If I figure it’s going…

According to the little weather-caster in my phone, it’s 66 here right now with a southeast wind blowing 14 mph, with gusts to 30. I was at Berkley’s Spirit Lake, Iowa, facility a few days back for a meeting. I love walking into that building because it simply reeks fishing, and I’m not just smelling the Gulp! they manufacture there. For decades this was the national headquarters for the company (it’s now in Columbia, South Carolina), and it’s still…

Many years ago, my parents scraped enough money together to buy a tiny, two-bedroom cabin on a clear lake noted for big panfish and bass. In a former life, the cabin was part on an old resort and rented by the week. It was built to close to the lake (just 10 feet) that when you looked out the front…
